A Toast

A toast to the vision here. A lot of critics have called Due Date just another Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and admittedly the setup is pretty much exactly the same. However, the script is just using this device to explore another theme, the father-son relationship and how it affects becoming a man and a father yourself. Heady stuff for most comedies, and this film doesn’t pull it off all the way, but it was worth the attempt.

Also, I have to give some love to how this movie is just so… bogus. A lot of movies talk about some pretty awful stuff to wring out a bit of comedy. Well… this movie doesn’t just talk about it… it goes there. Due Date is bogus like punching a baby, taking its sucker and licking it, then sticking it to its forehead and punching it again for good measure. If you find that at all funny, you will probably like this movie… if you’re just offended, then probably not.

I personally find it hilarious

Beer Two

While the attempt at legitimacy mentioned in the first part of the review was appreciated, you have to drink a beer to its failure. This movie has a real issue with transitioning between comedy and drama, often mixing them so poorly you have no idea what to feel. Its kind of like a Looney Tunes episode ending with Elmer Fudd shooting Bugs Bunny and then slowly skinning him with violin music in the background.

Although, it’d be nice to wipe that saucy smile off his face

It’d start out something like this…

Beer Three

Robert Downey, Jr.’s character is just mean. He’s not the gruff but lovable type, or the douchebag on the road to reform. No, from the first minute of the movie to the last, he’s a dick.

Just not this type of dick

This culminates in a brutal scene where he beats Zach Galifanakis like a Lifetime Channel wife. After the first few seconds it’s kind of hard to laugh at.

Beer Four

Zach Galifanakis kind of has it coming sometimes, though. I guess I’m saying that is kinda hard to root for either of these guys.

Yeah…

Verdict

Perfect if you’re in the mood for mean-spirited humor.
