A lot of people are calling this The Social Network’s year already. The other locks for nominations are The King’s Speech, The Fighter, and The Black Swan. The next tier would be shocking, but not impossible omissions. They include Inception, Toy Story 3, and True Grit. Most likely, The Kids Are All Right and 127 Hours will get in as well, leaving the last slot up to The Town, Another Year, and Winter’s Bone.
Recent release The Way Back, from highly regarded director Peter Weir, could also surprise, particularly if it also scores nominations fro Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Weir, or its cinematography. The release is likely too small and too late to propel it past favorites in any of these categories, though, regardless of its screeners. I’m going to slot Winter’s Bone in at 10 as the obligatory indy that’s stayed in the conversation all year, although any of my last three and the alternates could switch places.
