Oscar Nominee Predictions- Short Films

We moved! You can now find us at our own location, MovieBoozer.com | Movies Measured by the Pint! Movies Rated by Beers! We also have a new forum!

Best Documentary (Short Subject)

1. Born Sweet

2. Killing in the Name

3. Living for 32

4. Poster Girl

5. Strangers No More

Documentary and Live Action shorts are particularly tough to forecast, because of the almost total lack of info out there on them, so the best you can do is look at subjects and what Oscar voters usually seem to like (The Holocaust, Africa, Middle East, etc.) Killing in the Name, Strangers No More, and Poster Girl fall in there, and Living for 32 is on a fairly current event (the Virginia Tech shooting). That leaves the last slot for an environmental film, and Born Sweet seems to stand out here. Really, it could go any way, though.

Best Short Film (Live Action)

1. Ana’s Playground

2. Na Wewe

3. Shoe

4. Six Dollar Fifty Man

5. Wish 143

Keeping with the subject method of picking, Na Wewe’s Rwandan focus and Wish 143’s sick kid could get them in. Ana’s Playground’s premise is especially intriguing and Shoe and God of Love switch it up for some much-needed comedy.

Best Short Film (Animated)

1. Day and Night

2. Let’s Pollute

3. The Cow Who Wanted to be a Hamburger

4. The Gruffalo

5. The Silence Beneath the Bark

This is the least difficult short category to predict. Pixar usually gets in, so Day and Night is a solid pick. Let’s Pollute’s sarcastic humor should also be there, and The Gruffalo has British pedigree and recognizable voice talent. The Cow Who Wanted to be a Hamburger has a great title and category vet Bill Plympton on its side. The Silence Beneath the Bark has the artistic cachet and whimsy that often does well here, but could easily be replaced by any of the others on the shortlist.
