Oscar Nominee Predictions- Best Picture Indicators

We moved! You can now find us at our own location, MovieBoozer.com | Movies Measured by the Pint! Movies Rated by Beers! We also have a new forum!

Best Director

1. Christopher Nolan - Inception

2. Darren Aronofsky - The Black Swan

3. David Fincher - The Social Network

4. David O. Russell - The Fighter

5. Tom Hooper - The King's Speech

David Fincher is in. After that, Aronofsky and Russell are near locks and Hooper and Nolan will probably round out the category. Don’t ever count out favorites Danny Boyle or the Coen Brothers, and Mike Leigh and Lisa Cholodenko have strong support in some circles.

Best Original Screenplay

1. Another Year

2. Inception

3. The King’s Speech

4. The Fighter

5. The Kids are All Right

The King’s Speech, Inception, and The Kids Are All Right are all close to guaranteed as well-loved screenplay-driven films. The Fighter is another hot property likely to be in. I think this is where the Academy gives Mike Leigh his due, although Blue Valentine’s strong script or The Black Swan’s popularity could sneak them in.

Best Adapted Screenplay

1. 127 Hours

2. The Social Network

3. Toy Story 3

4. True Grit

5. Winter’s Bone

Aaron Sorkin’s script for The Social Network is the best I’ve seen in awhile and well in the forefront. Pixar has been getting nominations here and Toy Story 3 will continue the trend. 127 Hours and Winter’s Bone were strong adaptations getting a lot of mention as well. The Coens’ True Grit went back to the source material for their remake, and a more faithful approach could help it. The Town or Rabbit Hole’s sterling script could support it, however.

Best Cinematography

1. 127 Hours

2. Inception

3. The Black Swan

4. The Social Network

5. True Grit

The Social Network, Inception, and The Black Swan are all being recognized here in precursor awards, and it would be unexpected to see any of them lose out. True Grit’s Roger Deakins has been unjustifiably ignored for the win nearly as much as composer Ennio Morricone, but he usually gets the nomination. Filmmakers seem to like 127 Hours’ original shots best of all, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be supplanted by The Town, Shutter Island, or the latest in the Harry Potter franchise, which got an unexpected nomination last year here. Lastly, The Way Back’s cinematography is simply gorgeous, but likely will fall short for the reasons I mentioned in the Best Picture analysis.

Best Film Editing

1. 127 Hours

2. Inception

3. The Black Swan

4. The Social Network

5. True Grit

This category looks much like cinematography, with The Social Network, Inception, and The Black Swan leading the pack and 127 Hours being the savvy insider pick. The Fighter’s accomplishments in this arena will likely get it the final nomination, although True Grit or The King’s Speech could also factor in.
